CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

PARENT & ME (18mo-3yrs)

Even our tiniest gymnasts have the opportunity to run, jump, swing, and roll with the added support of a trusted adult. The overall goal of this class is for your little one to become familiar in our room so when the day comes for you to wait outside, they feel safe and confident.

TINY TOTS (3-5yrs)

This class is for children prepared to participate without a parent. We introduce the primary skills of gymnastics with tumbling, jumping, and other motor skills.

BASIC (6-16yrs)

Basic recreational gymnastics will introduce the gymnast to each of the events. No prior training is needed. Gymnast will increase in strength and flexibility. They will learn some of the gymnastics body shapes such as candle stick and pike.

INTERMEDIATE (6-16yrs)

Gymnasts will continue to work on the six fundamental body shapes for gymnastics. They should have mastered forward and backward rolls as well as cartwheels. Gymnasts will start working on their round off on floor, back hip circles on bars, cartwheels on beam and handstand flat backs on vault.

ADVANCED (6-16yrs)

In the advanced class the gymnasts will learn more drills and skill progressions. Prior to this class the gymnast should have a round off on floor, back hip circle on bars, and bridges on beam. Line work will be introduced as an addition to stretching and conditioning.

NON-COMPETE TEAM (6-16yrs)

This class is for gymnasts who have a strong interest for gymnastics and would like to compete in the future. Gymnasts should have back extensions, and both front & back walkovers on floor. They will be increasing their ability to cast to a horizontal position on bar so they can work on skill combinations. On beam, the gymnasts will work more in releve to develop and increase their balance.

GYMNASTICS TEAM

*Coming Soon*

Welcome to the Ocean Community YMCA Westerly-Pawcatuck Branch Gymnastics’ Team.  The Gymnastics’ team was formed in the fall of 2012.  The girls have competed in several meets in the past several months with more coming up.  The team strives on YMCA character and team unity.   This team encourages participants to try their best, and continue practicing to enhance their program experience and overall well-being.

General Team Information:

Practice runs from end of August through mid-June. Team practices, two-three times a week.  Monday-Friday evenings.  More practices are added in preparation for meets.

HOW LONG IS THE GYMNASTIC SEASON?
GYMNASTIC TEAM begins in August, with meets starting around the end of October. Most meets take place during the winter months and the program officially ends at Nationals time (If qualified). Our programs run during the summer for any members of the team looking to advance their skills. This is highly encouraged by our gymnastics leadership team.

WHEN ARE THE PRACTICES?
Team participants need to register for the Team Level practices under the “Westerly-Pawcatuck Sports Tab”.  Please find the gymnastics level your child is in and choose that program. Gymnasts must be a member of the Ocean Community YMCA in order to register.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH PRACTICE IS RIGHT FOR MY CHILD?
Coaches can help you decide which practice is right for your child.

WHAT CAN I AS A PARENT DO TO HELP THE TEAM?
The Gymnastics’ team holds fundraisers in order to raise funds for new equipment, meets and banquet as well as team unity.  As a parent, one can join the Boosters Committee and help plan such events.

HOW MANY EVENTS CAN MY CHILD PARTICIPATE IN?
In general, each gymnast can compete in as many meets as possible; the more meets the more chance to qualify for Nationals and Regionals.  Each meet has an additional charge to the existing team fee.  Meets can be paid for and signed up for at the Welcome Center.

WHERE CAN I GET GYMNASTICS TEAM APPAREAL AND ACCESSORIES?
Team orders them together as these have to be the same style. Please see head coach for more information.
