Swim Lesson Level Guide

The YMCA Swim Lessons program uses a skill-based approach designed to meet the needs of local Y’s and the community they serve. The new swim lessons curriculum allows for both standardization and flexibility. The organization of the curriculum ensures that swim lesson programs look and sound the same and every Y across the country. Swim evaluations available!

No minimal or previous experience in swim lessons. Children become independent in the water, build confidence, and focus on the skills of the basic freestyle stroke such as kicking and pulling, comfort putting their face in the water and blowing bubbles. Goal is to swim 5 yards without fear or assistance. Safety self-recue skills are introduced.

Can the student perform a front glide and swim 15 yards without assistance (5 yards for preschool level)? Can the student put their face in the water and blow bubbles for at least 10 seconds? Emphasis is on stroke development for freestyle and forward movement in water, as well as back stroke and movement on back. Basic self-rescue skills performed independently.

Can the student swim 25 yards on their front and back, 15 yards preschool level?  Choose this class. This class is designed to develop intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages. Submerge in chest-deep water to retrieve object at bottom, swim on front for 25 yards, independent water exits, jump swim turn swim grab for 25 yards, swim on back for 25 yards, roll, tread water for one minute and swim float swim for 25 yards are all introduced in this class. Introduction of swimming 50 yards will also be a part of this lesson. Swimmer must be able to swim independently.

This class is designed to introduce basic stoke technique in freestyle and backstroke and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. Endurance any stroke or combination of strokes for 50 yards, freestyle for 50 yards with rotary breathing, backstroke for 50 yards, sitting dives, resting stroke/elementary backstroke for 50 yards, treading water for 1 minute, breaststroke kick for 50 yards and butterfly kick for 50 yards are all introduced in this class. Swimmer must be able to swim independently.

Can the student swim freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, butterfly across the pool and back? Choose this class. This class is designed to continue stroke refinement on breaststroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. Endurance of any stroke or combination of strokes for 50 yards, freestyle for 50 yards, backstroke for 50 yards, kneeling dives, resting/sidestroke for 50 yards, treading water for 2 minutes, breaststroke for 50 yards and butterfly for 50 yards are all taught in this class. Introduction of swimming 100 yards will also be a part of this class.

Private Swim Lessons

Private swim lessons are the perfect learning environment for people who are just beginning to swim as well as for those who just want to become better at it. At the Ocean Community YMCA we offer options for both. These lessons will give you individualized attention from your swim instructor to ensure that you improve or master a particular set of swimming skills.

Swim Team

Naik Family Branch Hammerheads

Ages 6 to 18

The Mystic Hammerhead Swim Team promotes Y values, team spirit, competition, and fun. Swimmers will develop individual skills and stroke techniques, improve times and make new friends.

The season begins in September and ends in March. Swim Meets with other teams are conducted on various weekends through the season. Children must be able to swim at least 25 yards without stopping, use rotary breathing, know the breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly stroke.

Westerly-Pawcatuck Dolphins

Ages 6 to 18

Welcome to the Ocean Community YMCA Westerly-Pawcatuck Branch Dolphin Swim Team! The Swim Team is a wonderful organization that combines the excellence and dedication of our children and their parents. Swim Team should provide your child with an atmosphere that is safe, fun and challenging. We average over 100 swimmers and each and every one of them is special and recognized as such. The Dolphin Swim Team promotes the Y values, team spirit, competition and fun. Swimmers will develop individual skills and stroke techniques, improve times and make new friends. The season begins in September and ends in March. Throughout these months, swimmers will get the chance to compete against other YMCA Swim Teams with the SENECY league, as well as compete with other club teams now that we are a USA SWIMMING SANCTIONED CLUB! All Swimmers must have a YMCA membership.
