As we reflect on the past year, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support and dedication of our entire community. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones and made significant strides toward our shared mission.
As Chief Volunteer Officer, I am continually inspired by the passion and commitment of our volunteers and supporters. Your tireless efforts have been the cornerstone of our success, driving forward our programs and initiatives with enthusiasm and determination. Your generosity of time, talent, and resources has truly made a difference in the lives of those we serve.
Alongside our dedicated volunteers, our CEO and leadership team have worked diligently to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the past year. Through their vision, strategic guidance, and unwavering commitment to our mission, they have steered our organization toward continued growth and impact.
In this year’s annual report, you will find a comprehensive overview of our achievements, challenges, and plans for the future, all guided by our ambitious 2023-2028 strategic plan. This plan serves as a roadmap, ensuring that every action we take is aligned with our core mission and values. From innovative programs and community outreach initiatives to financial highlights and testimonials from those we serve, this report serves as a testament to the collective effort and dedication of our entire community.
As we look ahead to the future, we are filled with optimism and excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead.
Together, guided by our strategic plan, we will continue to build upon our successes, strengthen our partnerships, and work to create positive change in our community. Together, we will continue to build a brighter, healthier, and more connected future for all.
To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
To be recognized as the leading charitable organization which directly engages and connects children, adults, and families from all segments of our community in developing habits that lead to healthier and more fulfilling lifestyles.
In order to serve more people and expand the YMCA’s presence, we will enhance partnerships to support our strategic direction of facility and program expansion in meeting community needs.
With a promise to serve more individuals our YMCA will grow membership and expand programs through focused strategies, enhancing staff and strong relationship development
Through Philanthropy and Fiscal Management, the YMCA will commit to a deliberate focus on fund development thereby ensuring financial stability and greater impact. To build resilience and sustainability of our Facilities, we will improve energy efficiency.
To achieve our overall organizational initiatives, we will sustain and strengthen our board governance and recruit, develop, and retain staff and volunteers.
Celebrating a year of remarkable achievement, our organization experienced robust membership growth, a testament to the unwavering commitment of our community and the engaged staff at the Y.
Our Annual Support Campaign harnesses the dedication of over 140 volunteers, rallying them to raise funds essential for fueling the Y’s mission. Beyond financial support, our fundraising events serve as vibrant celebrations, uniting the community while generating crucial funds for YCares initiatives.
Our YCares Financial Assistance Program made a profound impact on individuals and families this year. By extending a helping hand to those facing financial challenges, we reaffirmed our belief that the YMCA is a place where everyone belongs, regardless of their economic circumstances.
“My journey to GOLD MEDAL started when I was 3 years old at a Tumble Tots class at the Ocean Community YMCA. Because of our access to the YMCA’s Financial Assistance Program, I was able to continue my training for over 10 years. In June 2023, I was able to travel to Ohio to compete in the National Gymnastics Competition. With hard work, dedication, and coaching, I won the gold medal in the Excel Gold level!”
In 2023, Camp Cove and Camp Watchaug, achieved record enrollment and registration numbers. With boundless enthusiasm and dedication, we’re paving the way for unforgettable adventures and lifelong memories at our beloved camps.
We strive to ensure that everyone, regardless of background or ability, feels welcome and valued in our programs and facilities. By listening to the diverse voices within our community and adapting our offerings accordingly, we’re committed to fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for all.
This year, we’ve embraced innovation and creativity to deepen our engagement with members, unveiling exciting initiatives and opportunities for meaningful connection. By forging stronger bonds and fostering a sense of belonging, we’re proud to enrich the lives of all those who call our community home.
“Since being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that creates hypermobility, I must be incredibly careful with pacing myself. Being in the pool at the Naik Family Branch helps me manage my chronic pain and fatigue, as well as exercise in the safest way possible for my body. The Y is a place for me to feel more confident and regain my autonomy with every visit. I would not be able to have this safe space without the YMCA’s financial assistance program.”
At the heart of the YMCA’s mission is the belief that today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders. Through our commitment to nurturing and developing the potential of young minds, we lay the foundation for a future generation of leaders who embody integrity, compassion, and resilience. By providing opportunities for growth, mentorship, and community engagement, we empower children to realize their full potential and make positive contributions to society.
In today’s dynamic world, prioritizing healthy living is essential for everyone. At the YMCA, we believe in fostering a culture of wellness that empowers individuals of all ages. Through our diverse range of programs and initiatives, we promote wellness, nutritional education, and overall well-being. By investing in our community’s health today, we’re building a stronger and more vibrant tomorrow.
We believe that we all have a role to play in creating positive change in our communities. Through our programs and initiatives, we strive to instill the values of compassion, empathy, and inclusivity. Whether it’s through volunteerism, advocacy, or fostering connections among diverse groups, the Y empowers individuals to make a difference. Together, we’re building a more equitable and compassionate society for all.
Through the support of our generous donors, the Ocean Community YMCA embarked on a transformative journey to enhance our facilities. Their invaluable contributions allowed us to complete several significant upgrades. These enhancements have not only revitalized our facilities but have also empowered us to better serve our community.
In the fall, the Westerly-Pawcatuck Branch underwent a comprehensive renovation, transforming our facilities to better serve our community. This revitalization project encompassed a variety of enhancements, including a modernization of the Welcome Center, a complete overhaul of the Child Watch area, an expansion of the Gymnastics Studio, and the introduction of state-of-the-art equipment in the Wellness Center.
This spring, we proudly unveiled the Naik Family Branch’s newest addition: a stunning amphitheater. Throughout the season, this versatile space became a hub of activity, serving as a gathering place for Camp Cove’s campers by day and transforming into a venue for family-friendly music events during the summer evenings.
With the generous support of The Kimball Foundation, the Arcadia Branch underwent a remarkable transformation, revitalizing its Welcome and Wellness Centers. From fresh flooring and updated paint to modern accessories, every detail was carefully curated to embody the spirit of the branch. This rejuvenated space now invites all who enter to embark on a journey of growth, wellness, and connection.

Jane Mendes is the distinguished Director at New Heights, a program of Vista Life Innovations, which is a center designed for adults with disabilities. New Heights students attend Y-Be-Fit classes at our Westerly-Pawcatuck and Naik Family Branches to work with our Wellness Directors for integrated programming which focuses on wellness and nutrition education. “I love it, I like the place, I like my friends there. I like everybody!” says participant Allison.
The YMCA celebrates our Heritage Club members, a very special group of people who have chosen to make a lasting impact on the Ocean Community YMCA by generously planning future gifts to the YMCA’s Endowment.

“I want to express my immense gratitude to the Ocean Community YMCA and the Camp Watchaug staff for inviting members of the Down Syndrome Society of RI to have the summer camp experience. Camp Watchaug gave our children the chance to be a kid, outdoors, experiencing a day in camp many ‘typical’ children take for granted. It was truly a summer day to remember, and an experience families are still talking about. Thank you for making this day possible.”
