Pickleball FAQ's

Pickleball FAQ's

Pickleball, a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Congressman Joel Pritchard and his friend Bill Bell. It started as a backyard game and quickly gained popularity. Today, pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide.

Players serve diagonally, with the serving team scoring points only. The ball must bounce once on each side before volleys are allowed, and games are typically played to 11 points, with a win by two margin.

Playing Pickleball at the Y offers numerous advantages that make it an ideal choice for enthusiasts of all levels. Beyond providing well-maintained courts and quality equipment, the Y fosters a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages community engagement and social interaction. Whether you’re a beginner honing your skills or a seasoned player seeking competitive matches, the Y offers diverse programming and opportunities for growth. Moreover, by joining the Y, you become part of a larger network dedicated to promoting health and wellness, with access to additional amenities and resources for overall fitness. Alison Longo (“Ali”)

Ali is an avid Pickleball player who strives to make every game “the best game”. She has been playing pickleball for nine years, her first introduction to the sport was at the Westerly YMCA and she has never stopped playing. In August of 2024, Ali was selected to be the USA Pickleball ambassador serving Washington County Rhode Island. In this position she promotes pickleball as America’s fastest growing sport, introduces new players to the game and engages in volunteer activity in the community.

When not on the court, Ali works with individuals who struggle with severe and persistent mental illness. Working in this field she is very interested in the benefits of pickleball for mental wellness, including improving mood, memory, reducing stress, building community and overall, wellbeing.

She is known on the court for her positive and encouraging attitude.

David Livingston

David Livingston is an avid racket sports player who loves pickleball and has been playing for about three years. David grew up in Stonington and played basketball and tennis for Stonington High School. Under Coach George Crouse, he became a Connecticut All State Tennis Player and was the Class M doubles champion his senior year. He first began playing pickleball at the Westerly YMCA and was later hired as the Pickleball Coordinator for the Ocean Community YMCA. Pickleball has rapidly grown at the Ocean Community with the addition of beautiful outdoor courts and indoor courts that were updated at both the Westerly and Mystic facilities. One of the most special parts of this for David is the community that has risen out of just a few people and now over four hundred players. The friendship, the camaraderie and the care for each other was an added perk to the fun and competitive play. Young and old, inexperienced and experienced, all come together on the court.

When David is not playing pickleball seven days a week, he also pursues his other passion of sailing, where he is the Coordinator of Sailing for the University of Rhode Island. David has three children, who he loves to spend time with, and resides in Westerly.
